Mary's simple aftercare rule

Keep it cool, clean, loose and hands-off. A little pinkness, warmth or small bumps around the follicles can be normal right after laser. The goal is not to over-treat the skin. Let it settle.

For 24 to 48 hours, avoid anything that adds heat, sweat, chlorine, friction or strong products. Do not scrub the area and do not try to pull out hairs that look ready to shed.

Your technician may adjust these instructions for your skin, the treatment area or how you reacted during the appointment. Follow the instructions given to you at the clinic first.

Laser hair removal aftercare Toronto guide at Aroma

The first 24 to 48 hours

Treat the area like skin that has been warmed and stimulated. You do not need a complicated routine.

Avoid heat and heavy sweating

Skip hot showers, hot baths, saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, hot yoga and intense workouts. Lukewarm water and a lighter routine are better while the skin is warm or pink.

Avoid swimming and chlorine

Stay out of pools, hot tubs, lakes and other shared water for 24 to 48 hours. Wait longer if the skin is still irritated.

Avoid rubbing and strong products

No scrubs, exfoliating gloves, fragranced products or tight clothing on the area. Pat dry instead of rubbing. Loose clothing is especially helpful after Brazilian, bikini, underarm, leg or buttocks laser.

Protect the area from sun

Keep freshly treated skin out of direct sun while it is warm, pink or sensitive. Use broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher on exposed areas and avoid tanning between sessions.

What is normal, and when should you call?

Usually normal

  • • Mild redness or warmth
  • • Small temporary bumps around the follicles
  • • Mild tenderness, dryness or a sunburn-like feeling
  • • Hair that looks unchanged before it begins to shed

These reactions often improve within hours, although sensitive areas can take longer to feel completely normal.

Contact Aroma

  • • Pain, heat or swelling that is getting worse
  • • Blistering, crusting, open skin or oozing
  • • Spreading redness, pus, fever or signs of infection
  • • A pigment change that concerns you

Seek urgent medical care for trouble breathing, facial or throat swelling, widespread hives, severe pain or a serious reaction.

Shedding usually happens 7 to 21 days later

Treated hairs do not fall out immediately. They can look like they are still growing before they loosen and release from the skin. That is normal.

Days 1 to 6

Let the skin settle

Hair may still look present. Do not pick, pull or scrub it.

Days 7 to 14

Shedding often becomes noticeable

Some hairs loosen in the shower or while gently washing the area.

Days 14 to 21

The process can continue

Coarse or dense areas may keep releasing treated hairs for another week.

Do not test the hair with tweezers. Let shedding happen naturally. Pulling hair from the root can interfere with the next session.

Shaving, exfoliating and skincare after laser

Shaving

You may shave once the skin feels calm and no longer tender. Use a clean razor and do not press hard.

Exfoliating

Wait until the skin is fully calm, usually at least 3 to 5 days. Restart gently. Stop if the area stings or becomes red.

Active skincare

Pause retinol, acids, benzoyl peroxide and other strong products on the treated area for 3 to 5 days, or longer if the skin is still reactive.

A few area-specific reminders

Face

Skip makeup and active skincare until the skin feels calm. Be extra careful with sun exposure and use SPF on exposed areas.

Underarms

Avoid deodorant if it stings. Wait until the area feels normal and choose a gentle product when you restart.

Bikini and Brazilian

Wear loose clothing and avoid heavy sweating, intimacy and direct friction until the skin feels comfortable again.

Legs, arms, back and chest

Avoid tight clothing, rough fabrics and sun on exposed areas. Use gentle products if the skin feels dry.

Between laser sessions, do not remove hair from the root

Do not wax, sugar, tweeze, thread or epilate the treated area during your laser series. Those methods remove the root that needs to be present for the next laser session.

Shaving is fine once the skin has settled. It cuts the hair at the surface without removing the root.
