The four preparation rules that matter most

For most clients, preparation is simple: shave 24 hours before, leave the hair root in place for 4 weeks, avoid sun and tanning for 2 weeks, and arrive with clean, calm skin.

Your current skin tone and recent tanning are checked before every session. If the skin is sunburned, freshly tanned, broken, or irritated, the safest decision may be to postpone treatment.

Laser hair removal preparation Toronto checklist at Aroma

1. Shave 24 Hours Before

Shave the treatment area about 24 hours before your appointment. This removes excess hair above the skin while leaving the follicle in place for the laser to target. Avoid a rushed shave immediately before your visit, especially if you are prone to nicks or razor burn.

If you cannot safely reach the area, or the skin becomes irritated after shaving, call the clinic before your appointment.

2. Leave the Root in Place for 4 Weeks

Do not wax, sugar, tweeze, thread, use an epilator, or use depilatory cream on the treatment area for 4 weeks before laser. These methods can interfere with the treatment plan or leave the skin irritated.

Shaving is the hair-removal method to use between laser appointments.

3. Avoid Sun and Tanning for 2 Weeks

Avoid direct sun, tanning beds, and self-tanner on the treatment area for 2 weeks before your appointment. Protect exposed skin with broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher.

Tell us about any recent tanning. We cannot treat sunburned skin, and a fresh tan may mean the session needs to be postponed.

4. Pause Strong Skincare and Tell Us About Medications

Stop retinol and exfoliating acids on the treatment area 3 to 5 days before laser, unless Aroma or your prescriber gave you different instructions. Tell us about antibiotics, acne medication, prescription creams, or anything that may increase light sensitivity.

Do not stop prescribed medication on your own. Under Aroma's clinic policy, laser is not performed within 6 months of Accutane or isotretinoin use.

Day-of laser checklist

Before you leave for Aroma, check these six things. They apply to both Bloor and Yonge.

Shaved 24 hours before

The area is shaved without fresh cuts or razor burn.

Clean, product-free skin

No makeup, deodorant, lotion, oil, perfume, or numbing cream unless Aroma instructed you to use it.

No fresh tan or sunburn

The treatment area has not been tanned and is not peeling or sunburned.

Skin is calm and intact

No active rash, open skin, infection, or significant irritation in the area.

Changes have been disclosed

Tell us about new medication, antibiotics, skincare, health changes, or recent procedures.

Comfortable clothing

Loose clothing can reduce rubbing after bikini, Brazilian, underarm, leg, chest, or back treatments.

Why preparation matters

Preparation reduces avoidable surface heat and irritation and gives your technician a clearer view of the treatment area. It also makes it easier to decide whether the skin is ready that day.

What if you forgot to shave?

Call the clinic before you come. Do not do a rushed dry shave in the car or washroom. Depending on the area, hair length, and skin condition, we may be able to adjust the appointment or may need to reschedule.

When we may need to reschedule

Contact us before the appointment if you have a sunburn, fresh tan, active rash, broken skin, significant razor burn, a recent peel, a new light-sensitive medication, or another change that may affect treatment.

Preparation tips by treatment area

Underarms and face

Arrive without deodorant or makeup. Stop retinol and exfoliating acids on the treatment area 3 to 5 days before, and tell us about prescription acne products or recent facial treatments.

Bikini or Brazilian

Shave 24 hours before and wear loose clothing. Avoid scented products on irritated skin, and tell us about cuts, ingrowns, rashes, or friction before treatment.

Legs and arms

Shave evenly, skip body oils and self-tanner, and protect the area from sun for 2 weeks before your appointment.

Back, chest, and stomach

Ask for help shaving areas you cannot safely reach. Tell us about breakouts, tattoos, moles, recent sun, or skin that is irritated from sweating or friction.

Before your first full laser treatment

Every new Aroma laser client completes a consultation and mandatory test patch before the first full treatment. The waiting time after the test patch is decided case by case.

We review your current skin tone and recent tanning, Fitzpatrick skin type, hair colour and thickness, treatment area, medications, medical history, tattoos, moles, previous laser treatments, and any earlier reactions. Tell us if you have a pacemaker or another implanted electronic medical device, because Aroma does not perform laser treatment on clients with pacemakers.

Mary's simple rule

Shave it. Leave the root. Keep the area out of the sun. Come with clean skin. And when something has changed, tell us before the appointment instead of hoping it will be fine.
